Just returned from a lovely 10 days in Turkey. We started in magical Istanbul. Beautiful, mystical Istanbul. I loved it. The mix of cultures; East meets West, different looking people who could easily be from the Middle East and then those that are clearly Mediterranean. I found it fascinating. But, I was disappointed that the historical part of the city is so covered in tourist shops that it was really hard to see the real Istanbul. I felt that I couldn't see the real, historical city. I wanted to strip it all back and start again.
But beautiful none the less. Take a boat trip. That would be my advice.
